Tales of the Anomaly

As a professional marketer working with a team of accountants, I often find myself sticking out like a sore thumb – especially since I am a department of one. Yes, we’re all people and we’re all professionals, but I’m always surprised to see how differently we process facts, generate ideas and approach problems. Put a typical accountant and typical marketer in the same situation and I guarantee they’ll walk away with entirely divergent assessments. Here is an example:

Last week I went on my first inventory observation. Basically, this is when an auditor “observes” their client’s inventory counts for year-end balances. In my case, I went to a manufacturing client as a tag along with one of our auditors. Now, I pay attention to details. I notice if your company has a new logo, or if you’re wearing a new shirt or if you’ve started coming into the office earlier. But even though I pay attention to details, I would not make a good auditor. When we walked in to our client’s lobby I noticed their holiday cards proudly displayed on the reception desk – I even noted where the one we sent was hanging (second to bottom row, two from the left). Later I asked the auditor I was with if he saw the cards. “Cards, what cards?”. Yet he painstakingly went through inventory ticket after inventory ticket, agreeing with the numbers, cross referencing them and testing them. As we went out into the plant we passed through an office area. I nudged him – “hey, they have carpet just like ours!” Let’s just say his look was one of confusion and disgust. I could almost hear him thinking “seriously?!” But he spent hours walking the plant, ensuring the accuracy of dozen different counts and looking for the slightest opportunity to help our client.

Thank goodness for auditors - those folks that have unending patience, a dedication to numbers and fierce attention to the details most of us would miss.

Cloud Beats Most In-House Security

Anyone who's been mildly curious about cloud computing has read articles detailing the cloud-busting obstacle that security has been when it comes to executives' unwillingness to venture into the great unknown. This is more of a concern to not very particular consumers than it is to very particular businesses.

In an article written by Dan Burger he discussed his interview with Harold Moss, the chief technology officer of cloud security strategy at IBM about the security concerns. He echoed the "not all clouds are created equal" truism, and added that IBM clouds were more secure than most companies' in-house security because companies struggle to apply the appropriate levels of security and also with the interpretation of security information they collect.

Google is widely recognized for their security and most notably with their Google Applications. Just this week, Google scored a major win when the U.S. General Services Administration announced plans to become the first federal agency to move all of its e-mail and collaboration tools to a cloud-based service, specifically Google Apps. Google encrypts all of the application data and spreads it across a minimum of 1,000 servers within 30 separate data centers in the United States.

Microsoft has received FISMA certification for its cloud computing data centers, a key step toward gaining customers in the federal government market that has been infiltrated by rival Google. However, Microsoft's hosted Exchange and Online services have not yet been awarded FISMA approval.
Conclusion: If you are using the cloud, stick with the major players and you will be more secure than your internal systems could ever dream.

Administration Announces New Small Business Programs

President Obama recently announced two new small business lending initiatives to help increase access to capital and create jobs. These temporary Small Business Administration initiatives include a refinancing program for small business owner-occupied commercial real estate and an expanded working capital loan program. At the same time, the president continued his call for a permanent increase of the maximum loan sizes for SBA's 7(a), 504 and microloan programs and to extend the successful small business Recovery Act lending programs. These initiatives are part of the Administration's broader agenda to improve access to credit for small businesses, including a proposal to transfer, through legislation, $30 billion to a new Small Business Lending Fund that will support lending by community and smaller banks.

Winton Associates, Inc., a capital advisory firm located in Cincinnati, announced today that effective immediately they have changed their name to Rippe & Kingston Capital Advisors, Inc.

Winton incorporated in 1986, and has been the broker dealer affiliate of Rippe & Kingston Certified Public Accountants and Advisors for the past 5 years. This affiliation has been beneficial to the clients of both firms, allowing collaboration and the exchange of knowledge. The unique combination of experience and service offerings is one of the reasons for the name change.

“By aligning the names of both firms, we are more effectively communicating the broad variety of services we are able to offer our clients,” says Joe Rippe, Managing Partner of the Rippe & Kingston family of companies. ”Our broker dealer affiliate has always been a successful part of the firm, and by sharing a name we can enhance public awareness of this thriving relationship.”

As mentioned in the last edition of Visions, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act includes a number of changes that affect businesses. For example, a new benefit must be provided to terminated employees that generally allows them to pay only 35 percent of monthly health insurance premiums under COBRA. Employers pay the rest and then get reimbursed from the federal government.

Employers also must send notices to eligible former employees telling them of their rights under the new rules, including those terminated as far back as September 1, 2008.

The IRS has issued a series of questions and answers for employers to help explain the complex, new responsibilities. If you have 20 or more employees on your payroll, you must comply with this regulation.

The users of this information typically do not publish to this type of portal; rather, they are the consumers of the information prepared and published by others. For example, consider a corporate portal that provides access to the following:

Reports that enable users to acquire information and/or make key business decisions

News, weather, and stock quotes from syndicated content feeds

Availability of e-mail, calendar, meeting schedule tools, and other heavily used business applications

Thanks to Jennifer Houston, an employee with Rippe & Kingston Systems, fewer people will be going cold this winter. Jennifer organized a winter clothing drive to support the Brighton Center, a United Way agency based in Newport, KY. R&K employees donated over 80 pieces of winter gear including coats, sweaters, scarves, gloves and boots.

The Brighton Center served over 66,000 individuals and families through 41 different programs. They offer an array of services from day care to young parent career counseling, employment training, family development and independent living services.
